Keeping Company With Rabbits
Are rabbits soft and fuzzy? Most definitely. Are rabbits as cuddly as they look? Not necessarily. Is a rabbit more like a cat, or a dog? Neither. A rabbit is like a rabbit.
Are you expecting your rabbit to come running when called? Sometimes, they do (if they're in the mood). Are you expecting your rabbit to curl up on your lap and sit with you? He might. He may nudge your leg while you sit on the couch, wanting you to move or pet him. Perhaps he will jump up and sit with you, allowing you to pet him for a few moments, then scamper off.
Do you want to hold your bunny for hours? Well, most don't like to be held for very long. Most prefer you to be on the floor with them, and meet them on their own level. This is where your rabbit will allow you to snuggle her and show your affections. Try snuggling close, face to face, but don't rush. It takes time for your bunny to gain trust in you. The first time she nudges or grooms you, the process of trust has begun.
As with any animal, or humans for that matter, each rabbit has his or her own personality. Some are active and crave attention. Some are shy or aloof. Appreciate your rabbit for her or his own individuality.
Most important, love your rabbit! Whatever the color, size, direction of ears, color of eyes, habits or personality, all rabbits are of value and deserve our love and companionship.
Anticipated expenses: In addition to any adoption fees, initial setup (pen, feed, litter, toys, etc) costs usually run between $75 to $125.00.
On-going expenses will range from $20+ per month.
Rabbit vet care can be expensive. Check-ups average $25- $55 per visit. In general, plan on a yearly check-up for healthy rabbits under 5 years old. Ask your vet about rabbits 5+ years old. Emergency vet care can easily run in the hundreds of dollars.
Private spay or neuter expenses typically range from $90 to $250 dollars. Adopting a rabbit who is already spayed or neutered from a shelter or rescue group is MUCH easier and MUCH less expensive!
